Run ENVI Tasks from the Toolbox
Lesson 1 of 1
Run ENVI Tasks from the Toolbox
Background
Most tools and workflows in the Toolbox are based on combinations of ENVI Tasks. An example is the Thematic Change tool (located under the Change Detection folder), which uses these underlying ENVITasks:
- •
BuildGridDefinitionFromRaster(opens in a new tab) * •
RegridRaster(opens in a new tab) * •
ThematicChange(opens in a new tab)

All ENVI Tasks are available for use in the ENVI Modeler as Task nodes. For example, the yellow nodes in the model below represent individual ENVI Tasks:

See the Introduction to ENVI Modeler(opens in a new tab)quick guide for details. This is one way to work directly with ENVI Tasks. Or, you can access individual ENVI Tasks through the Run Task tool.

Here, you run ENVI Tasks using simple dialogs that let you specify input data, parameter values, and output files. Plus, you can access some tasks that are not exposed in the Toolbox. Let's look at one example.
Create a Label Entropy Texture Raster
This task creates a texture raster that is useful for edge detection and feature extraction.
- 1
Select File > Open from the Menu bar. The Open dialog appears. 2. 2
Go to the "data" directory in your ENVI installation path.
Windows: C:\Program Files\NV5\ENVIxx\data (xx is the version number)
Linux: /user/local/NV5/envixx/data
Mac: /Applications/NV5/envixx/data
3. 3
Select the file qb_boulder_msiand click Open. This is a Quickbird multispectral image of Boulder, Colorado. The picture below shows the image at its full extent.

- 4
In theToolbox, expand the Task Processing folder and double-click Run Task.

- 5
In the search window of the Run Task dialog, enter label. 2. 6
Double-click the Label Entropy Texture Raster tool. The Label Entropy Texture Raster dialog appears. The Input Raster field is automatically populated with qb_boulder_msi.

- 6
Select the Virtual Raster option. 2. 7
Click OK. When processing is complete, the texture raster is added to the Layer Manager and displayed in the Image window.

This is one example of a specialized task that is only exposed through the Run Task dialog or the ENVI Modeler task list. For a full list of ENVI Tasks, see the ENVITasks by Category(opens in a new tab) topic in the Documentation Center.
- 8
Click the Cancel button in the Run Task dialog.
This concludes the quick guide.
